With thirteen new songs from Singer-Songwriter Joanie Pallatto- it's as if you were sitting in the club with the band. Virtuoso guitarist and co-producer Fareed Haque returns! The recording features an acoustic ensemble, with percussionist Eric Hines, Juan Pastor on cajon and percussion, the acoustic bass of John Christensen and pianist Bradley Parker-Sparrow. Our long time friend, writer, author and poet Achy Obejas contributed liner notes. Rounding out the "team" is graphic design from Al Brandtner, and engineer Todd A. Carter on the controls.

In celebration of guitar legend George Freeman's 95th birthday on April 10, 2022, Southport Records is pleased to announce the release of "Everybody Say Yeah!", a new compilation of recordings documenting 26 years of Freeman's music from our "Real Jazz Made in Chicago" catalog. Eleven of the fourteen songs are Freeman's originals including a new recording of "Perfume."
An original himself, George Freeman IS jazz history. He remembers a time when Charlie Parker wouldn't go onstage without him. His life in music has taken him around the world, but home and family in Chicago have always been where his heart is, and where as an elder statesman he continues to influence a new generation of Chicago's jazz legacy.

The music of George Flynn is no mere stance; his melodies are full of circumstance. George Flynn's compositions have the ability to overwhelm and amaze with intense expression and musical abandon. 

Flynn, late in his career as a faculty member at DePaul University in Chicago, made the decision to write a work for each of the major ensembles in the School of Music- the chorus/chamber choir (St. Vincent's Words, 1995), the orchestra (The Density of Memory, 1997) and wind ensemble (American City, 1998). These works are all performed by DePaul University musicians - faculty, students and an alumna, and were recorded in the DePaul University Concert Hall (2006-2007.)

Fred Anderson is a Chicago original.  His tenor saxophone sounds like a mighty warrior - the sound clear, focused and strong.  This notable recording features both the late Malachi Favors Maghostut on acoustic bass, and Ajaramu (AJ Shelton) on drums.  "Black Horn Long Gone" was recorded at Sparrow Sound Design Recording Studio, Chicago, Illinois - January 1993 - A Direct-to Digital Recording.

Southport Records presents composer/arranger/saxophonist Tim O'Dell - "Dreams of Pangaea," recorded in Clapp Recital Hall at the University of Iowa. Johnson County Landmark (JCL) is a band consisting of students and jazz faculty based at the University of Iowa, and directed by trombonist-bandleader-professor John Rapson. O'Dell's signature aesthetics coax the tradition of contemporary jazz big band out of the box with this collection of 10 evocative tracks. At times recalling the sounds of Maria Schneider, or the Miles Davis/Gil Evans era, O'Dell's compositions and arrangements explore atmospheric tones, Latin pulses, emotional ballads, groove-based moods and free-wheeling solos.

Pianist/composer Bradley Parker-Sparrow explores a new theme for a film by director John Covert, "Shut Eye." The music is cinematic in scope, following the sinister moods of characters within the film, featuring vocalist Joanie Pallatto, the flugelhorn of Bobby Lewis, vocalist April Aloisio, john E. Magnan, bass and Alejo Poveda, drums. Meshing the concert grand piano with keyboard work and samples, Sparrow presents his dramatic, thematic statements. Much of Pallatto’s work features wordless vocals, portraying the moods and characters imagined onscreen, including a breathy duet with Lewis on the sexy track, “Wet.” The director says of the film: "A Shut-Eye is what magicians call one of their own who gets so good that he begins to believe in his own magic and forget that it's just a trick."

Who is this guy? Studs Terkel called him "the vunderkind." Interviews with Bruce are featured in three of his books. Bruce writes and publishes books used in universities. He was the creative director for a President of the USA. He helped Apple Computer develop a strategy system. He produced Popeyes jingles with Dr. John, the Neville Brothers, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and more. Cool stuff.

On "Can't Sing. Don't Care" you'll hear "songs from the hip." They cover life, love, and politics, "like a martini with an ironic twist." We like Bruce. We love his music. Great lyrics. He makes us laugh.

“Instant Groove” is dedicated in remembrance to the late, great electric bassist Thomas Kini. Thomas’ sound can still be heard on “Instant Groove” on two selections, “Saudade II” and “Dreamsville.” To quote Bobby Lewis in his CD liner notes on Thomas, “His passing in 2004 was shocking to all whose lives he touched, and the INSTANT GROOVE that he possessed (smile, spirit, musicianship, kindness and magnetism) will forever be remembered.”

Southport pianist/composer and arranger Willie Pickens will release a two volume set, "JazzSpirit," with new arrangements for quartet and duo of religious music, Co-Produced by Hyde Park Union Church with segments taped for two 9' Grand's at U of C's Mandel Hall, featuring Willie with his pianist daughter, Bethany Pickens. Other musicians on the CD's feature Pat Mallinger, Tito Carillo, Ari Brown, Robert Shy, Kobie Watkins, Rob Amster, Larry Gray and Marlene Rosenberg. This collection grew out of a sacred jazz concert series at Hyde Park Union Church, on Chicago's South Side.

You don't need to listen much further than the convention-shattering Chicago group TV Pow, which in some occasions amounts to a laptop trio, each of its players manipulating the keypad the way a piano virtuoso might finesse a Steinway. Though TV Pow players also often double on more traditional instruments, their laptop jam sessions represent a new frontier in jazz improv. 

Even so, TV Pow's Todd Carter insists that he and his colleagues -- Brent Gutzeit and Michael Hartman n come a lot closer to jazz tradition than some listeners may realize. "Playing the laptop is really like playing any musical instrument -- if you practice enough, it comes faster," he says.

Beyond large orchestral works, many feel that the musical essence of any composer can be found in works for small ensemble. The small ensemble seems to peer into the brain of composition and creativity. "Together" is in essence 3 duets for Violin and Piano that span several years in the life of Chicago new music composer and educator George Flynn.

It also documents his long relationship with Chicago violinist Katherine Hughes. George Flynn is blessed with the ability to not only write for the piano, but also to play and execute his notated concepts. The composer is the pianist in these intimate settings.
"Together" is another release in The Southport Composers Series. This series of sound experiments and compositions documents new classical music from Chicago to a world market. George Flynn plays the 9' Baldwin Concert Grand from Sparrow Sound Design.

GUITARIST HAROLD FETHE makes his recording debut as a leader on Out Of Nowhere but he is no mere beginner. After starting his music career as a youth, he took 25 years off to work as an executive in the biotech industry. Since his return to music in the late I 990s, he has regained his playing abilities and built upon them, with the sensitivity of one who has experienced much in life and loves to play music more than ever.

The art and substance of internationally known Roscoe Mitchell (founding member of The Art Ensemble of Chicago) with bassist/producer Tatsu Aoki (Fred Anderson/The Miyumi Project/ Francis Wong/Asian Improv Records) gives Southport Records the concept of "First Look" and a very special duo recording.

An exotic army of reeds, flutes, percussion, and toys rides along side the percussive bass of Aoki. In some situations both artists take us on percussion excursions, leaving their melodic instruments by the side of the road, and then scurrying back for them like proud energetic children.
