Magnan, bass and Alejo Poveda, drums. Meshing the concert grand piano with keyboard work and samples, Sparrow presents his dramatic, thematic statements. Much of Pallatto’s work features wordless vocals, portraying the moods and characters imagined onscreen, including a breathy duet with Lewis on the sexy track, “Wet.” The director says of the film: "A Shut-Eye is what magicians call one of their own who gets so good that he begins to believe in his own magic and forget that it's just a trick."

UPC: 700797011622

Todd Carter:: acoustic and electronic instruments Brent Cutzeit :: acoustic and electronic instruments Michael Hartman :: acoustic and electronic instruments

You don't need to listen much further than the convention-shattering Chicago group TV Pow, which in some occasions amounts to a laptop trio, each of its players manipulating the keypad the way a piano virtuoso might finesse a Steinway. Though TV Pow players also often double on more traditional instruments, their laptop jam sessions represent a new frontier in jazz improv.

Even so, TV Pow's Todd Carter insists that he and his colleagues -- Brent Gutzeit and Michael Hartman n come a lot closer to jazz tradition than some listeners may realize. "Playing the laptop is really like playing any musical instrument -- if you practice enough, it comes faster," he says.

S-SSD 0115 GEORGE FLYNN "Together"

UPC: 700797011523

Beyond large orchestral works, many feel that the musical essence of any composer can be found in works for small ensemble. The small ensemble seems to peer into the brain of composition and creativity. "Together" is in essence 3 duets for Violin and Piano that span several years in the life of Chicago new music composer and educator George Flynn.

It also documents his long relationship with Chicago violinist Katherine Hughes. George Flynn is blessed with the ability to not only write for the piano, but also to play and execute his notated concepts. The composer is the pianist in these intimate settings.
"Together" is another release in The Southport Composers Series. This series of sound experiments and compositions documents new classical music from Chicago to a world market. George Flynn plays the 9' Baldwin Concert Grand from Sparrow Sound Design.

S-SSD 0114 SUSAN MAY "BLACK COFFEE"

UPC: 700797011424

14 year old Susan May continues her musical journey with her second Southport Release, "Black Coffee." The mixture of youth and voice gives her audience a renewed picture of her world and dreams, as Susan makes songs from the past feel new, and the listener becomes part of her vision.

Once again Susan entrusts her musical arrangements with veteran Southport pianist/arranger and composer Bobby Schiff with 11 tracks from The Great American Songbook. When Susan sings the classic standard and title track "Black Coffee" it is as if she is looking into the window of a New York SoHo coffee shop and reading the life emotions of those clustered inside. On "Willow Weep for Me" Susan brings a new resonance to the dreamy melody, and check out Bobby Lewis on flugelhom. .. it is the Lewis and May expedition!

The voice, life and art of Susan May brings renewed hope to the world of music. For there was a time when words and melody fell from the radio, before the endless one dimensional pathos of new music's current existence. Susan May is the voice that pulls from all sides.

S-SSD 0112 ROSCOE MITCHELL/TATSU AOKI "FIRST LOOK"

UPC: 700797011226

When musical worlds collide the energy gained in the universe can be a fine situation. The art and substance of internationally known Roscoe Mitchell (founding member of The Art Ensemble of Chicago) with bassist/producer Tatsu Aoki (Fred Anderson/The Miyumi Project/ Francis Wong/Asian Improv Records) gives Southport Records the concept of "First Look" and a very special duo recording.

An exotic army of reeds, flutes, percussion, and toys rides along side the percussive bass of Aoki. In some situations both artists take us on percussion excursions, leaving their melodic instruments by the side of the road, and then scurrying back for them like proud energetic children.

The epic, cut 4, "The Journey," lifts with light percussion from a tropical morning. Tatsu sends out a light aggressive groove and Roscoe traces the pulse with his sweet alto work. The Journey is the essence of this Chicago Duo.

Southport Records has produced and recorded new music from Chicago to the world for over 25 years. Media, we appreciate your time and energy!

S-SSD 0111 TIM O'DELL "ANCIENT PINES"

UPC: 700797011127

It is a lush world that is the canvas for this series of original new music duos on reed man and composer Tim O'Dell's 2nd Southport opus, "Ancient Pines." O'Dell is a modern artist that blends his passion for music with performance, composition and education... several ways to pass along his gift of tone and style.

The focus of this CD is to blend the art and bas work of Tatsu Aoki, one of the most recorded and written about Chicago based jazz creators, into the open mode of duo creation. The 12 tracks on this direct to digital recording are like 12 distinct chapters in a fine novel. The music moves with humor and passion.

One thinks of earlier experiments by Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman, but beyond the historic name dropping there is a new beauty, a new style. Feel the energy of track 2, "The Drive." And in the CDs only "trio" excursion, bass trumpet ace Ryan Shultz spots a guest appearance kicking things up a notch, approaching the orchestral.
